Probiotics what?

Probiotics what?

Probiotics - so hot right now!

I don't know about you but I am pretty sceptical about supplements. OK super sceptical.  I would usually be the first to say that this whole discussion about gut health and probiotics (so cool right now) is a supplements scam designed specifically to get us to buy yet more vitamins.

BUT, I have to say I was a little curious - what does my own personal biome mean to my overall health? Is it unbalanced? How is it really impacting me? So after reading a bit more into it, doing some research and practicing the art of taking probiotics, I have to say I am a convert. And here's why:

Good Guys, Bad Guys and Very Bad Guys

I'm sure you've already heard (from countless articles and podcasts on the topic - as we said, so hot right now) but if you haven't, our gut is also known as our second brain. The communication system between our gut brain and our main brain is so incredibly sophisticated and fast that the gut brain can express and make its desires felt by the main brain - we can literally 'trust our gut'. OK so its not yet doing our taxes but it is telling our main brain a lot of interesting things. And I personally think we should be listening.

In Bec speak (let's not get too technical) in the gut there are literally trillions of bugs (ewww) - good, bad and very bad bugs (ewww, ewww, ewww). As I understand it, the key is to keep the good bugs happy and outnumbering the bad and very bad bugs because if we have an imbalance then this can cause problems for our overall wellbeing. However, the tough things is that no one actually knows what this exact balance should be and it is likely different for every person. What we do know is that we need to keep the good bugs happy and well fed.

To have a healthy gut we need to look after it and make sure we have a healthy balance of good and bad bacteria. This is where probiotics come in.

So - what are probiotics?

If you think about your gut like a garden (I am personally a fan of this analogy even though I have a horrible habit of killing off all the plants in my garden) then probiotics are the seeds. Probiotics provide beneficial bacteria that colonize the GI tract with optimal amounts and types of bacteria.  Your garden needs to be tended, which is why it is important to include probiotics either through what you eat or in supplement form.

So how do we know what to eat? I don't want to overload you with information so in brief our genetics have not evolved very far since we lived in caves and foraged and hunted for our food. So our gut still behaves like it did eons ago but we now feed it modern processed food full of additives, colouring and sugar, we travel, we exercise differently and do all sorts of other things that weren't around eons ago. This all impacts on the balance of good bacteria in our gut, which will ultimately impact on our health. Uh oh.

We know that foods such as legumes, beans, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, yogurt and whole foods are all loaded with good bacteria. My problem is:

a). finding the time to properly research which foods I should be eating; and

b). finding the time and energy to then somehow work them into my diet - particularly while I am balancing kids who are extremely fussy, a job, the washing, the folding, the homework, a social life etc.

And in my experience, kimchi does not go well with red wine.

So what to do???

To deal with my problem of time (or lack thereof), I take a powder supplement. It is super easy because I can have it on cereal, in a smoothie, in a glass of water or (my favourite way) directly from the spoon. At the beginning of my probiotic journey, I had the fortune to meet the founder of PONO Probiotics www.ponoprobiotics.com. And I love her because she is a kick ass woman doing kick ass things EVERY SINGLE DAY and her probiotic powders have billions of CFUs (formal speak for good bacteria).

We spoke to Daina, the founder of probiotics about why she founded this business and what makes PONO probiotics so damn good. P.s - how cute is this photo!!

"PONO Probiotics came to life not long after we relocated our family from South Australia to Queensland, and in the process, introduced the kids to a new childcare, new climate and new illnesses.

After a few months of settling in, and the kids catching everything, Sands ended up in intensive care with a respiratory infection. After a 24 hour stay in hospital, I began to look at the possibility that there may be a further underlying issue with his immune system. A very caring doctor explained the impact that antibiotics could have on gut flora and inspired me to begin a journey of research and learning into the importance of gut health for the entire family. This is what lead me to the creation of PONO Probiotics.

I noticed a gap in the market for fun family friendly probiotics that taste delicious and are in a format that can enable them to be incorporated into your daily routine, for example being added to your smoothies, cereal, yoghurt, chia puddings, bliss balls, or even taken straight off the spoon. We wanted to produce industry leading products in an approachable, tasty, family friendly format.  My husband and I were married in Hawaii, and so when we discovered the ancient Hawaiian word PONO, that means rightness, correctness, alignment, goodness, excellence and well-being, our choice was made. These are things that we hope for in life for ourselves, our families and also our health!"

If you want to get all serious about your gut health like me, you can find this amazing tasting and gut saving PONO powder at www.ponoprobiotics.com.

Hakuba Has our ❄️ Hearts

Hakuba Has our ❄️ Hearts

Skiing (or snowboarding) is the BEST Family Holiday

When our kids were little my husband and I decided that skiing would be a feature of our family holidays. Purely selfishly of course. What child, when they no longer think hanging with their parents is 'cool' or in the least desirable, would say 'no' to a family skiing holiday! Also...we can put the kids in ski school from 9am - 3pm where they have fun, learn to ski safely and competently (instead of like little crazy drunk people on sticks) AND we get the day to ski as a couple ... and maybe have a little lunchtime nookie (whaaat? We're on holiday!). My personal favourite place to ski right now (please understand I am pretty fickle and will probably change my mind on this after the next ski holiday) is Hakuba in Japan. Let me tell you why. But first - how cute are these guys!!

Getting to Hakuba

Getting here is a cinchple (my 9 year old's answer to something that is a cinch and simple - its that easy). We took a direct flight from Brisbane to Tokyo, spent 5 days in Tokyo (I promise I will blog about this too because it was AWESOME), sent our ski luggage ahead of us to Hakuba so we didn't need to deal with it and children and trains and directions, and then caught a direct train from Shinjuiku to Hakuba at 7.30am in the morning. Trust me when I say sending your luggage ahead is worth it for approximately AUD$20.00 a bag it means you can focus on getting to the right landing, not losing your kids in the crowds (unless that's desirable of course - don't worry we understand), having a relaxed entry on to the train without having to fight with all the other passengers trying to find space for their own mountain of luggage and having space for a couple of 'one glass sake's'. Just organise it directly from the airport or your hotel. Too easy.

Getting home (do I really need to talk about this already? aaaggghh) was just as easy. We took the Nagano Snow Shuttle from Hakuba Base Camp direct to Narita airport. It took about 6 hours but there were plenty of rest stops with really interesting eateries on the way to keep you entertained. Oh...and the bus had wifi. Kids on iPads and me with a great book. That is 6 hours after 2 weeks of skiing well spent!

Sleeping

Ok so I admit that when I sat down to plan this holiday I felt overwhelmed with the different localities within Hakuba. Hakuba is really quite big and can appear daunting when first looking at it. Trust me though - once you are here it is all very straight forward and easy. There is a free shuttle that runs between ski fields and, while the timetable is slightly hard to interpret at first, it is all pretty easy.

We chose to stay in Happo One. This is largely because the Evergreen Ski School is there and we had heard excellent things about it. We stayed in the Gondola Apartments. They are well appointed, fully self contained, WARM (quite possibly THE most important thing in Hakuba) and the location is excellent. I have to be honest with you though (as promised) there are some strange things like only one mirror in the whole house (gasp!) and absolutely NO storage whatsoever. Apparently this is not unusual for Hakuba. The laundry/drying room is downstairs and communal, but pretty straightforward to access. AND there is no Toto toilet (why else do we come to Japan??). BUT I would still absolutely recommend it. It is a short walk to the gondola where (if you are organised) you can easily jump on with the kids and ski them to Evergreen OR it is one shuttle bus stop away from the slope where the ski school is located. It is warm and near loads of amazing restaurants and bars. The manager, Kieran, is a peach and more than happy to help in any way required. They also run a free pick up and drop off service to the bus to get back to the airport and to the supermarket for supplies. Oh and they run a micro brewery in Iwatake that will pick you up and drop you home if you are having dinner there. Perfect!

Apres Ski

There are plenty of tiny little restaurants in Hakuba but (be warned) a lot of them need to be booked in advance.

Sometimes you (I mean I) just feel like a little bit of good old Aussie food and drink. For this, we absolutely loved the Rabbit Hole. The food was totally on point - burgers, loaded fries AND a couple of healthy grainy salads. They also do Fireball whiskey shots - if you haven't tried one, you simply must. Whiskey and cinnamon in a sweet belly-warming shot. Soooooo good! Complete with a pool table, this is a fabulous bar with the kiddies.

We also really liked Blizzard - a brand new pizza/pasta joint a hop, skip and jump from the front door of the Gondola Apartments. It opened in Mid-January this year so its brand spanking and it actually has a choice of red wines on the wine list. Most restaurants and bars over here have one red or one white wine. That's the choice. Not quite as sophisticated as I'm used to. The decor is seriously cool too - definitely worth at least a drink if not two.

Child Care (oops I mean ski school)

We put the kids into Evergreen Ski School. I have to say I am super impressed. Previously I've felt like ski school is actually just a form of child care and the kids don't actually learn very much. That is NOT the case here. The kids had 9 days of lessons in groups of 3 days with one or two days off in between so they get a break and don't get too cranky with tiredness. Their skiing has gone from OK they can ski in mainly snow plough in slow deliberate wide turns down fairly easy green slopes to WOW they can ski parallel with poles (perfectly planted) down any slope on the mountain, do small jumps and not scream bloody murder when I take them down a black slope. The instructors are attentive and really focussed on skill building. Seriously good. The only very small issue is that you drop the kids off at 10am and pick them up at 3.30pm, which doesn't leave a lot of time to ski on a different field (like Iwatake or Hakuba47 for example). But honestly, I think that's just the nature of Hakuba.

Private Lessons

I ski at a reasonably advanced level. OK so I don't do 360's, hefty mogul runs or much tree skiing but I can ski competently down a double black diamond and keep up with my slightly more adventure seeking husband. Regardless I like to fit in a ski lesson wherever possible to make sure I can still keep up with my kids when they're 15 (or quite possibly 10 at this rate). This holiday I did a full day lesson (including a small powder clinic - perfect for those of us who grew up skiing in the Southern Hemisphere and haven't actually encountered powder before) with John Stewart from Hakuba Snow Sports. I love this ski school as it is run by a couple of kiwis (sorry not sorry - I am biased of course!) and they specialise in private lessons. John was hands down THE best instructor I have ever had. To be fair he is the instructor of the instructors and is not always available for lessons but if you can book him you should. He teaches by getting you to understand how something should feel. I can remember feelings even when I can't remember specific techniques. So, rather than try to remember how I am supposed to be bending my legs, exactly what position my body should fall to and how to turn the skis, John taught me how I should feel when I am doing all of those things correctly. Now I know if I am getting it right because it feels right. Genius.

Check out these amazing shots of John (sadly not me) doing his thing!

I am ever hopeful that if I just spend enough time following John down the slopes that I too can look like this...a girl can dream right??

But How Do I Choose the Right Field?

There are 8 main fields in Hakuba - Happo One, Goryu (Limore & Hakuba 47), Iwatake, Tsugaike-Kogan, Cortina, Kashimayari, Jigatake and Sanosaka. We were in Hakuba for 14 days and skied on Happo One, Limore, Hakuba 47, Iwatake and Tsugaike-Kogan. My favourites were Iwatake and Tsugaike-Kogan. Both fields are quiet and have a lot of options for multi-level skiing. If you are a beginner, both fields have incredible beginner green slope terrain and the more advanced red and black runs are fabulous for the more advanced skier.

Happo One was great because of its location. We waltzed (not literally...except on powder days) out our front door to the main Happo One gondola, which was fabulous but the slopes are a bit busier because of its central location. On our first day, we made the mistake of trying to ski the kids to ski school. We quickly discovered that the only run from the gondola (that we knew of at that stage anyway) was a double black diamond. VERY BIG OOPS. Picture a hysterically screaming 7 year old being evacuated from said run by my stepbrother. Serious kudos to the man that can snowboard near vertical moguls while carrying a sobbing 30kg child. Not my finest parenting moment. Luckily for everyone this is not a parenting blog. And just trust me - on the first day (no matter how keen you are to hit the slopes) take the shuttle!

What if I don't want to ski?

These days I feel like I slot into the 'apres ski' camp more than I do the 'actual ski' camp. And sometimes I just want a day to rest my aching old (ish) muscles and not put on a gazillion layers of base, mid and top layer thermals, ski pants, ski jacket, glove liners, gloves, buff or balaclava, helmet and goggles. I get exhausted just thinking about it. And don't even get me started on ski boots!

To be honest there are not a lot of options in Hakuba if you don't feel like skiing. If you also don't want to curl up with a good book or a movie on Netflix (yes the Gondola Apartments do offer Netflix - yay), then your options are either the snow monkeys or a cooking class. I am not one for tours and the idea of being stuck on a bus with a million tourists from 7.30am - 5.30pm was frankly not appealing to me. So snow monkeys were out. In saying that, I have heard amazing things about the tour so if you're into that kind of thing, it would be incredible I am sure. Instead I did a gyoza and ramen cooking class with the kids. I LOVED it. It started at 10am and finished at 1pm after we had gorged ourselves silly on the mountain of gyoza and huge bowls of ramen we had made. It was easy and it made me re-think my aversion to cooking Japanese style food at home because I thought it was too complicated. There are a number of cooking classes available in Hakuba so choose the one that suits you and make sure you book in advance. And look - there's a fashion element too - how cute are these aprons. Kawaii!

The season starts in Hakuba on 20 December and ends late February. I would recommend waiting until about the 7th or 8th of January because the Japanese holidays and long weekends are finished then so the slopes won't be as busy. In saying that, the fields are incredibly quiet compared to our slopes in the Southern Hemisphere so pretty much anytime is going to be great!

What are you waiting for? There's still plenty of time this season!!

How Cool is the Calile Hotel?

How Cool is the Calile Hotel?

Because everyone deserves a mini break right! OK so full confession - we tried to book our Robe Christmas lunch at Hellenika (one of Brisbane's newest and hippest restaurants) late. Very late. Like the week before. Oops. So (of course) we HAD to book a night at the Calile Hotel to ensure we could be squeezed in for lunch (oh the things we have to do).

The dreaded check in

We arrived for lunch at 12pm and dropped our bags at the front desk. I have to say I dread check in at hotels as it always seems a palaver and, while there was no glass of prosecco to ease the pain (one of my favourite things about European Hotels), the process was remarkably smooth. Despite being 2 hours early for our check in time of 2pm, the incredibly professional and friendly staff moved things around and found us a room available for immediate occupancy. Whaaaat? We didn't even ask for it. Our bags were whisked away and we were free to sit back, relax and enjoy lunch. Pretty impressed.

The Architecture

This is a beautiful hotel. There is no denying it. One of the things I absolutely LOVED about was its laid back resort feel - perfect for Brisbane weather and, well, wearing your Robes around the pool...despite it being in the middle of a hustling city. Architects Adrian Spence and Ingrid Richards looked to cities that already had a resort focus for inspiration such as Miami, Palm Springs, Rio De Janeiro and Mexico City. They "wanted to establish a civic vernacular that celebrates our own unique hot weather and outdoor lifestyle" said Spence in a recent article. The central pool (which is huge), beautiful cabanas with large centred ceiling fans and sun loungers certainly give it that amazing resort feel. But I have to say I was more taken with the externally ventilated corridors and high fans that created a perfectly balanced breeze while inside, the internal gardens that made me feel like I was outside in a tropical garden and the unique spaces created throughout the hotel for guests to just sit and relax. It truly is a masterpiece of urban design.

Relaxation Plus

We chose a Poolside room so we could wake up, throw open the doors to our balcony and enjoy the morning. Despite feeling a little dusty on Sunday morning (thank goodness for full block out curtains), we did just that. The beautiful staff  (with seriously cool uniforms) at breakfast had no concerns with serving our breakfast to us in our room after we decided our balcony was a much better option than the lobby bar. Ben had calamari stuffed with pork and noodles (seriously delish) and I had a salmon bagel with cream cheese, capers and a Japanese slow cooked egg. Could not fault it. Oh, except they don't serve mimosas until 10am...I had almost forgotten I was not in Europe. Having woken pretty early and with a check out at 11am, we found ourselves with plenty of time to do a bit of yoga, read the paper and go shopping. Now that's a good Sunday morning.

The only thing I found was lacking was the number of nights we had to spend there. But never fear, we will be back. Soon. Maybe next weekend. You can find the Calile Hotel at 48 James Street, Fortitude Valley, QLD, Australia. Website is thecalilehotel.com. Oh and make sure you grab a Robe to take with you - it is PERFECT poolside!

Behind the Scenes: Our Friends Shoot!

Behind the Scenes: Our Friends Shoot!

We love any excuse for a party... and when you throw in some fabulous Robes, gorgeous accessories from our friends at El Zapato, Becker Minty Brisbane, Jimena Alejandra and Une Piece, it's sure to be a fun day!

Summer had hit us at Robe HQ like a tonne of bricks (thank goodness for air conditioning!) and so we decided to organise a shoot to show off our collection (including a few new pieces) - but this wasn't going to be just any campaign.

Our Robes are about more than just having a beautiful piece to throw on over your swimwear, they are about feeling sexy and confident by the water, laughing with friends and celebrating life.

We wanted our imagery on our website and social platforms to reflect our Robe customers and our best Robe life, so we asked YOU!

We were so excited by the response we received on social media, and we found four incredible friends (+ Bec who hates to miss out on a champagne session with friends!) who perfectly embody the Robe woman - stylish, confident, and with a penchant for champagne.

Our friends got dressed and glammed up by the amazing Reanin Glah and Mallory Osses, and had a fabulous day by the pool with champagne, laughs, and some seriously delicious platters from The Picnic Co.

Thanks to the fabulous Mel from Smile Photographics, the girls felt comfortable, confident and gorgeous as they 'posed-not-posed' for the camera. She perfectly captured how much fun our 'accidental models' (a term coined by Venny!) had on the day and all the beautiful pieces they were wearing.

You'll eventually get to see all of the fabulous photos on social media, but for now we wanted to introduce our friends and show you a sneak peek behind the scenes...

Venny:

"Hey there! I'm Venny. I'm a Mum of three crazies and an early years teacher who generally goes at a million miles per hour! I was excited to be part of the Friends Shoot because it was not only a super fun way to spend the day, but I also got to know some lovely ladies that I hadn't really met before! The hair and make-up, the champers, yummy snacks and beautiful accessories were an added bonus, as were the divine Robes we got to wear! I loved the styles and colours of several Robes however, my favourite was the Bec. I felt this style suited my shorter stature and can't wait to try it out these school hols!

You can find Venny on Insta @thisloudlife

Claire:

Hi, I'm Claire - mother of two active boys and a lover of the beach and outdoors. I feel very privileged to have been part of the Robe's Friend's Shoot. From getting my hair and make-up done, to drinking champagne with the girls, to being styled in beautiful Robes - the perfect day! I have several Robes as they work effortlessly in my lifestyle. I love how I can wear them to the beach (they dry so quickly) and then straight out to lunch or drinks. My favourite is the Bec in Leopard  - it was on high rotation on my recent trip to Hamilton island.

You can find Claire on Insta @theaccountantswife

Annie:

Well hello there! I'm Annie. I'm a new member of the 40 club and have two gorgeous little girls. I have had about 5 careers (all incredibly varied) and now have my own jewellery range. I wanted to do the Robe Shoot because ... who wouldn't? You get to swan about in gorgeous Robes and hang with some of your favourite people. I love the way each of the ladies has carved out their own path as mature (sometimes), smart, kind hearted people. Seriously I fell in love with the new Bec in Leopard - I saw it on Insta and was immediately smitten... Bec herself can attest to that! Leopard print is a neutral right??

You can find Annie (and her beautiful jewellery) on Insta @order_of_style

Jan:

Hey there, Jan here! I'm a Brisbane Mum of 3, and I'm from England with Jamaican parents. I have a background in medical research and have an online Vegan Health & Wellness business. I love to travel, sing and eat out. I wanted to be involved in this shoot because there is zero better ways to spend your Monday morning than to hang out with your beautiful girlfriends in a stunning home, have your hair and make up done professionally, get dressed up in the most stunning resort wear ever, have professional pics taken, while drinking champers the whole time! What's not to love? My week peaked very early! The Sarah in Charbon de Bois was my pick to take home. I loved everything about it - the colour, the length, the gorgeous low back and the POCKETS!!

You can find Jan on Insta @jan_reid_health

And a few BTS shots, because why not??

Fashion shoots are always fun - as Kate Spade said, 'Playing dress up begins at age 5, and never truly ends' - but this one was definitely special. Thank you to everyone involved!

Launching Champagne on the Beach

Launching Champagne on the Beach

Any excuse really for a party we say. Luckily though we had a real excuse - the launch of our very first collection - Champagne on the Beach.

The day of the party started at 2pm with the arrival of Wild Sisters Caterers who put together the MOST INCREDIBLE spread we have ever seen...outside our Christmas party (that these talented girls also catered) that is.

C H E C K  I T  O U T

Our 100 guests began arriving at 5.30pm and the night continued to warm up with drinks by Sofi Spritz and Peregrine Wines flowing. There was plenty of laughter and chatting as our guests mingled with each other and used the opportunity to touch and try on our beautiful Robes, all of which were on display in the space. We were so honoured to have a number of local Brisbane bloggers and influencers there including Isabella Gray, Ella Golding, Rachel Thaiday, Penelope Bell, Karen Suzanne, Leticia Gaskell, Sarah Elizabeth Turner, Kerrie Carruci and Cherilyn Jones. These lovely Brisbane personalities together with our friends made for an incredibly beautiful and elegant crowd.

Guests were then treated to a runway showcasing eight of our Robes from the Champagne on the Beach collection with commentary by founder, Bec Kroon and one of Brisbane's top stylists, Jenni Sellan.

The night continued until late with more drinks, laughter and amazing tunes from DJ El Discotheque. Bring on the next one we say!

Styling your Molly with Style

Styling your Molly with Style

We are in LOVE with the Molly in Charbon De Bois. It is sophisticated yet sexy and brings a bold sensual look to the beach. It is a serious stand out piece that will have people whispering (OH MY GOD - THAT's AMAZING) as you float past, glass of champagne in hand and breeze in your hair. Here are a few tips to take you one step further (hopefully without causing your onlookers to go into cardiac arrest):

During our campaign shoot we styled it with the amazing High Tide Wrap Neck Maillot by Bondi Born, who's ethos is "luxury without compromise".Now that's something we can relate to! The swimsuit is perfect because it is sophisticated but still sexy AND it is also made out of high quality luxurious fabric. Finally we added the Filipa Negro sunglasses by Loewe, which add a contemporary edge to the look - ah the Spaniards know what they are doing when it comes to relaxed luxe.

The Molly (incredible piece that it is) can also be worn as a dress (STOP IT!). As seen here styled by the super hot Nikki Phillips on a recent holiday in Fiji. We love that Nikki has styled it with a bright red head scarf to balance the relaxed blue charcoal tones of the Molly. This little number is from Shein. OR if you are looking for a good excuse to treat yourself (always!) - try it with a ridiculously pretty Gucci turban. And we have to agree that barefoot is just perfect for that lovely relaxed beach feel. Just be sure to have squeezed in that all important pedicure!

And let's NOT forget about poolside! Seen here on the gorgeous Sarah Rudkin styled with a sleek but cheeky black one piece from Kaiama Swim (exclusive to City Beach stores - check them on Insta at @kaiami_swim) and headband from Zara. Just perfect for a champers by the pool on a relaxed Sunday afternoon. We know what we're doing this weekend! xR
